Gold leaf on the lid has been a trend on the catwalks for many years. Pat Mcgrath used it during the SS12 Milan Fashion Week, Holly Fulton soon followed suit in AW14 and took inspiration using a similar method with silver leaf. Both gold and silver leaf give off the same effect but the colour gives a strong difference between the two. Using inspiration from bothg Pat Mcgrath and Holly Fulton we was given the choice on how we should recreate the look. I chose to recreate the Pat Mcgrath look as i liked the way she covered the brow more.

Hollys Demonstration:

Holly started the lesson by giving a demonstration of how to recreate the look. Holly prepped the skin, the applied a light foundation so the skin was kept fresh and clean. She then powdered lightly under the eye area and arond the nse to give more coverage and reduce unwanted shine. She then followed on with cream contouring products to keep give the face a more natural contour. Using a water based mixing medium from MAC she stuck the gold leaf on up to the eyebrow. She then used a brush to give the look the 'shattered glass' effect. Following Pat Mcgraths look she applied black gel eyeliner across the top lash line and over the gold lead to finish the look.

Step By Step - My Recreation.

1. Taking inspiration from Pat Mcgraths SS12 i wanted to make the skin extra dewy. I started by prepping the skin with moisturiser so i had a fresh base to work on. I then mixed strobe cream in with my foundation so that it is extra dewy. I then applied concealer under the eyes, round the nose and around the mouth so that it there is more coverage.

2. I contoured the face using a dark foundation then buffed it lihgtly into the hollows of the cheekbones to give a more natural finish.

3. Using some water based mixing medium i brushed the mixing medium onto the eyelid and up to the brow. I then mesaured out the gold leaf into the size that i wanted and cut it out. Then using my brush i picked up the gold leaf and carefully placed it onto the lid. (it is crucial to point out that you shouldnt handle the gold leaf with your fingers as it sticks to them).

4. Then using a fluffy brush i brushed the gold leaf lightly to break it apart giving the 'shattered glass effect'.

5. Then using a black gel eyeliner i lined the upper lid from the inner corner and rounded it at the outer corner. it is important to make the line a concise size and keep it thick and neat as this was the look that was required.

Evaluation:

In evalutaion i enjoyed recreating this look as it was a more creative approach to a catwalk look. The result was good an di was pleased with the outcome. The gold leaf was extrmely fragile so took me a few attempts to actually get it stuck to the eye and not my fingers. Once on the eye it was easy to break and brush apart which was good. In future i will use vaseline for the eye as i borrowed Hollys (lecturer) mixing medium because i dont have it in my kit. Overall i think it represented Pat Mcgraths look.
